biodiversity act

South African female traditional leaders are implementing a groundbreaking approach to promote rural livelihoods. A project is being implemented that will help manage indigenous knowledge systems and the sustainable exploitation of natural resources that have nutritional and medicinal values.
...

Ms. Matshidiso Moroka, CSIR’s program manager of technology for development said that the South African government recently introduced a Biodiversity Act to address the need to protect indigenous knowledge systems. “The Act requires bioprospecting companies to provide benefit sharing arrangements that have the approval of all stakeholders before being granted a research permit,” she explained.

The female traditional leaders requested the South African government’s assistance to protect their indigenous knowledge systems. They said that this could be achieved through greater enforcement of the Biodiversity Act.

Meanwhile, the traditional leaders said they assumed if their campaign to promote the management of indigenous knowledge systems in South Africa succeeded, agents of multi-national pharmaceutical companies would try to exploit other southern African communities that might not have mechanisms to protect their indigenous knowledge systems.

Despite recent court rulings, "biopiracy" -- non-locals patenting treatments based on plants used by indigenous communities -- continues to be a problem. Construction of databases and knowledge archives about native group uses of local plants is an increasingly popular way of combatting biopiracy (by establishing "prior art," and blocking patents), but such projects are not easily accomplished. Indigenous knowledge is often an oral tradition, and remote communities in the developing world may not be willing to share that knowledge with outsiders.

The Management of Indigenous Knowledge Systems Project is a South African effort to identify and protect the unique local biosystems used by local communities as medicines, based the authority -- and knowledge -- of female traditional leaders. The result has been something even greater than a knowledge archive:

planetary wars

We've continued to keep a watch for objects in orbit around the Sun that could possibly be called a "planet" -- and it turns out that the most recent candidate has been hiding in plain sight. 2003 EL61 (it has yet to be given a formal name), although officially announced yesterday, was spotted initially in 2003, and images of it have been found in archives as far back as 1955.

2003 EL61 was first spotted by Jose-Luis Ortiz at the Sierra Nevada Observatory in Spain in March of 2003; the team's website includes some of the initial details, as well as the first photo used to identify the body.

Jose-Luis Ortiz and his group were not the only ones to have stumbled across this object. Mike Brown at Cal Tech also found it, in mid-2004 (although he didn't identify it until December, 2004). It turns out that, in astronomy, naming and primacy of discovery accrues to the team that announces first. If Brown and his group had called a press conference for last week, they'd be given credit for the find, even though Ortiz, et al, had spotted it first.

these are extracts from an article on worldchanging on 29th July link

announced on 31st july

A US astronomer has announced the discovery of a 10th planet in the outer reaches of the solar system that could force a redrawing of the astronomical map.

If confirmed, the discovery - by Mike Brown, a professor of planetary astronomy at the respected California Institute of Technology - would be the first new planet since Pluto was identified in 1930 and would shatter the notion that nine planets circle the sun.

"Get out your pens - start rewriting textbooks today," said Professor Brown, announcing what he called "the 10th planet of the solar system", larger than Pluto.

"It's the farthest object ever discovered to orbit the sun," Professor Brown said of the planet, said to be covered in methane ice and which lies nearly 15 billion kilometres from Earth. "It's probably 1½ times the size of Pluto."

About 97 times further from the sun than Earth is, the celestial body (tentatively called "2003-UB313") is the farthest known object in the solar system and the third brightest among the Kuiper Belt objects. It was first spotted in 2003, but not identified as a planet.

wayne hill sculpture theft

The sculpture, a plastic bottle of water full of melted ice from the Antarctic, was intended to be a telling comment on the dangers of global warming. But one light-fingered, and presumably thirsty, visitor to the exhibition may have missed the point. Rather than musing on the hazards that will be created if the icecaps melt, the visitor is believed to have drunk the piece.

Police have been called in to investigate the mystery of the missing water bottle, which vanished from the Way With Words literary festival at Dartington Hall in south Devon. They are not sure if the thief knew the water was part of a sculpture and drank it as a joke or if he mistook it for an ordinary bottle of water. Officers also admit it is possible that another member of staff thought the piece was just a discarded bottle and threw it away.

The sculpture was the creation of the American-born artist and writer Wayne Hill. He brought back two litres of melt water from the west Antarctic and designed a bottle to hold it. A label on the bottle described where the water was from and included the words: "
Weapon of Mass Destruction", because of the devastation melting ice caps could create.

The piece was displayed in its own room at the literary festival earlier this month. Halfway through the festival it was noticed that it had gone. Hill said: "
It was designed to look like an ordinary object, like an ordinary bottle of water, but it was clearly marked out as an exhibit."If you put something in a frame or on a plinth people usually recognise it's a piece of art and treat it with respect." Hill said he was considering creating another identical piece.

A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall police said:
"We are looking at the possibility someone drank the water without knowing it was a piece of art. Or it could have been thrown away by a member of staff who didn't recognise what it was."

star wars - revelations

All this week the BBC News website is speaking to people whose creativity has been transformed in the digital age. From blogging to podcasting, millions of ordinary people are becoming writers, journalists, broadcasters and film-makers thanks to increasingly affordable and accessible tools.

The latest Star Wars film has been downloaded more than three million times in the last few months and the film-makers are delighted. But this is not Revenge of the Sith being pirated - it is a so-called fan film called Star Wars: Revelations. Revelations is a 40-minute long film made by Star Wars fans for fans and it is breaking ground due to the professional polish that has been brought to the production. "We wanted to produce a high-calibre film," explains director Shane Felux, who lives in Virginia, in the US.

WOMAD stands for World of Music, Arts and Dance, expressing the central aim of the WOMAD festival - to bring together and to celebrate many forms of music, arts and dance drawn from countries and cultures all over the world.

WOMAD was originally inspired by Peter Gabriel: "Pure enthusiasm for music from around the world led us to the idea of WOMAD in 1980 and thus to the first WOMAD festival in 1982. The festivals have always been wonderful and unique occasions and have succeeded in introducing an international audience to many talented artists.

"Equally important, the festivals have also allowed many different audiences to gain an insight into cultures other than their own through the enjoyment of music. Music is a universal language, it draws people together and proves, as well as anything, the stupidity of racism."

tracey moffatt

The photographer is almost as famous in art circles for her inaccessibility as she is for her stunning 1989 series Something More, in which she appears as a doomed glamourpuss in the outback, resplendent in a red cheongsam. They became the most valuable Australian photographs sold at auction when bought for $227,050 last year. Moffatt has both stoked our curiosity with her wild narratives, in which she regularly stars, and ignored our desire for some kind of explanation.

She loathes interpreting her work, often refusing to be drawn on the significance of her adopted personas, whether it's as a naked companion for a stuffed sheep in Pet Thang, a self-described "witchy woman" preying on scuba divers in the luridly kitsch Adventure series or a mother frightened by haunted railroad tracks in her feature film Bedevil.

giving back stolen goods

The man recently named as the world's most influential artist has been accused of stealing ideas from a former lover, herself an internationally renowned figure in the art world.

Maurizio Cattelan is Italy's most successful contemporary artist. In 2004 after his sculpture of a hanging horse, The Ballad of Trotsky, was auctioned for $1.2m (now £686,000), ArtReview magazine put him at number four on a list of the art world's VIPs. It was the highest ranking for any artist.

An inveterate prankster, Cattelan once persuaded a curator to dress up for the sake of art in a pink bunny suit. But the latest controversy was ignited in an interview published last month by the Italian edition of Vanity Fair.

The Genoa-born artist Vanessa Beecroft - best known for her disturbing installations of living, almost nude, models - said she had had an affair with Cattelan before either became famous and that she was the source for many of his ideas

....
Pressed on whether he stole ideas from others, Cattelan replied: "Was Warhol robbing Marilyn [Monroe's] identity when he painted her? And what was Cézanne doing? Robbing apples? In art, all you can do in the end is appropriate that which surrounds you. So it is never a robbery. At the most it is a loan. Unlike thieves, artists always give back the stolen goods." full article at the guardian

age & gender

Selected by Art Historian Frances Borzello, academic and commentator Germaine Greer, artist Jenny Saville, and gerontologist Dr Leonie Kellaher Art Age and Gender is a groundbreaking exhibition of women artists exploring ageing. Initiated to coincide with the UN Year of Ageing it is a timely intervention into a debate which, in many crucial aspects, affects women more than men.

The exhibition is of startling diversity. From over 250 original submissions 54 artists were selected ranging in age from art students to very senior citizens; from widely ranging backgrounds, culture and education. Working in media as different as Video, Ceramic, Painting, Textile, Photography, Glass, and even Knitted Steel Wool; the exhibition literally covers from cradle to grave.

The artists have written about their work and the often very moving and illuminating texts are shown alongside the work as well as in the catalogue.

gifts in the urban landscape

Cracks in the Pavement: Gifts in the Urban Landscape is a multi-phased, interactive project that calls attention to the “in-between” spaces encountered throughout everyday life. The project focuses on details within the urban landscape and encourages close inspection of our social space. This summer, artists based in locations around the world will respond to what they find in their urban environments by making art objects designed to be placed in sites that intrigue them—-at bus shelters, in alleys, under bridges, in libraries or post offices, or deep in park bushes. Members of the public are invited to search for these site-specific works using maps and clues provided at www.cracksinthepavement.com. Art works featured in Cracks in the Pavement may be kept by whoever finds them. Works not found will be allowed to remain in the landscape indefinitely to be encountered by chance, displaced, or transformed by the very environmental forces that define each piece's context.

the live issue - berlin

Backjumps - The Live Issue
20/08/2005 - 16/10/2005 , Berlin

During the period from mid- August until the end of October, parallel to "Kunstherbst Berlin" and with Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien as the core exhibition place, international Street- and Urban Art artists from New York to São Paulo will be presenting their work in Berlin once again. In 2003 the foundation for the reflection of the interdisciplinary interfaces and advancements in the Street Art sector was laid - this year we will consequently build up on this foundation. Berlin as a city with its streets will be more involved and act the role of a “live magazine” – whole facades will be reutilized innovatively by artists, decentralised exhibition rooms like galleries and public space along with the Bethanien will dilate the focus beyond Kreuzberg. Workshops, walks and city maps will guide the residents and visitors through the “magazine pages” of the city and motivate them to actively explore their city and participate. This way, the experimental character of the exhibition and its art form will come more to the fore this year.

dutch podcasting prices

p2pnet.net News:- BUMA/STEMRA, the Dutch collection organisation for composers, lyricists and music publishers, has come up with licensing rates for podcasting.

The license structure looks much like that for webcasting, of which the organisation thinks podcasting is a comparable form. Commercial podcasters will have to pay a minimum of 85 euros (about $103 at the time of writing), and amateurs can get a license for 35 euros (about $42) per month for an unlimited number of podcasts. The rate for amateurs seems rather high, though, coming to 420 euros (about $509) per year. And other collection organisations might set their own, additional rates.

BUMA/STEMRA says it will trust podcasters to notify the organisation about podcasts that include music, and pay the set rate. But if enforcement of this license system follows in the future, how many amateur podcasters will stop playing music (and promoting the musicians they plug? Are amateur podcasts set to become the new talk radio? Or will amateurs start to pick up the instruments themselves?

ladyshave home edition

Ladyshave Home Edition started its life as collaboration between MAMA ands Cell Project Space, London, where it was shown this May-June.It asked a London audience to compare its preconceptions of Dutch womanhood with how artists from the Netherlands discuss female identity and gender. Ladyshave Home Edition, the substantially reworked and elaborated version of that project, offers a Dutch audience the same opportunity.

In the light of the "re-emergence" of gender politics, a notable feature in the programme of this summer's Venice Biennale and one of the most pressing current social questions for Dutch society, MAMA once again offers a timely thought-provoking project.Ladyshave Home Edition also gives conscious space to a number of the emerging generation of Dutch artists, including a number likely to be of interest to a Rotterdam audience.

blog to pod - talkr

Talkr is inviting bloggers to convert their text-only English-language blogs into podcasts using Talkr's free podcasting tool. The initial setup takes about 10 minutes, and the podcasts require no ongoing effort.

"Talkr takes text-only blogs and converts them into audio files," explains Chris Brooks, CEO of Talkr.com. "We then provide bloggers with tools to distribute these mp3 files as podcasts. However, we've always targeted a very narrow slice of bloggers, focusing on well-known blogs such as Jeffrey Zeldman and Corante."

"Now," continued Mr. Brooks, "we've decided to cast our net a bit wider. We are now inviting anyone with an English-language blog to create a podcast with Talkr."

Podcasting News has set up a live example of Talkr converting our RSS feed to a text-to-speech podcast.

Many companies have released podcast recording tools in the past several months. "Talkr is different" says Mr. Brooks. "Those other tools are great if you have the time and patience to install a new application and then record, host and distribute a podcast. However, many people don't have the time. If you already write a blog, Talkr will give you a podcast with little effort and zero cost."

Talkr allows anyone with an English language blog to create a podcast for free. Registration at the site is required.

style wars

New York's legendary Kings of Graffiti own a special place in the hip hop pantheon. Style Wars is regarded by many as the definitive document of the emerging hip hop culture, an emblem of the original, embracing spirit that burst forth to the world from underground tunnels, uptown streets, clubs and playgrounds.

The film chronicles an extraordinary epoch of youthful creativity and civic controversy. Teenage graffiti artists made New York City's ramshackle subway system their public playground, battleground, and spectacular artistic canvas. Opposing them were Mayor Edward Koch, the police, and the Transit Authority. As MC's and DJs rocked the city with new sounds, street corner B-boy breakdance battles became performance art. Today this superbly photographed, world-acclaimed, prizewinning film, newly hailed at New York's Tribeca Film Festival, and in Europe from Berlin to Barcelona, is more timely than ever. The phrase "New York, 1982" (the superimposed title that starts the film) has itself become a code for a legendary time of heroic teenage exploits, a touchstone for successive generations of youth worldwide, many of whom can recite the film's dialogue by heart.

the writing on the wall

graffiti defined

"Graffiti. Term applied to an arrangement of institutionally illicit marks in which there has been an attempt to establish some sort of coherent composition: such marks are made by an individual or individuals (not generally professional artists) upon a wall or other surface that is usually visually accessible to the public. The term "graffiti" derives from the Greek graphein ("to write"). Graffiti (s. graffito), meaning a drawing or scribbling on a flat surface, originally referred to those marks found on ancient Roman architecture. Although examples of graffiti have been found at such sites as Pompeii, the Domus Aurea of Emperor Nero (AD 54-68) in Rome, Hadrian's Villa at Tivoli and the Maya site of Tikal in Mesoamerica, they are usually associated with 20th-century urban environments. Graffiti range from simple marks to complex and colorful compositions. Motives for the production of such marks may include a desire for recognition that is public in nature, and/or the need to appropriate public space or someone else's private space for group or individual purposes. Illegitimate counterparts to the paid, legal advertisements on billboards or signs, graffiti utilize the wall of garages, public rest rooms, and jail cells for their clandestine messages. This illegal expression constitutes vandalism to the larger society."

but is it art?

Its called "Bucket of Blood" but perhaps it should have been titled "Dead Cat". It was the late movie and it had me hooked from the opening scenes. Its a great critique of the arts industry as seen from 1959, with much of the commentry applicable in today's art market. One thinks of dead cows and corpses.

as described on books online
"Movie Script -- Original Title Death Artist -- The great Roger Corman produced and directed this cheerfully gory skewering of beatniks and the arts community. Dick Miller plays Walter Paisley, a no-talent busboy who idolizes the artsy types who frequent the coffeehouse where he works. When Walter accidentally kills his landlady's cat, he tries to hide the crime by covering the kitty in clay, and is soon hailed as a sculpting genius. Sure enough, the fickle arts community begins clamoring for some larger work. As a horror movie, A Bucket of Blood is merely okay, but it's great as a little black comedy. Corman works in some nice gruesome touches, such as backing up Walter's Big Emotional Moment with a steady drizzle of blood from a victim's arm. Most of the jokes aimed at the artists' pretensions still seem fresh: When offering Walter some breakfast, Maxwell announces that they're having "soy and wheat-germ pancakes, organic guava nectar, calcium lactate and tomato juice and garbanzo omelettes sprinkled with smoked yeast." The free-verse parodies are also very funny. Don't expect Bucket of Blood to keep you up with nightmares, but do sit back and prepare to enjoy a refreshingly sick sense of humor."
------------------------------------------------------------------

"Bring on the multitudes and the
multitude of fishes - feed them
that you will be satisfied,
nourish the artist, stretch their
skin upon an easel, crush their
bones into a paste, so that he may
mold them, let them die, and by
their miserable death become the
clay in his hands, that he might
form an ashtray or an ark - that he
might take you in his magic hands
and wring from your marrow wonder -
all that is comes through the eye
of the artist"

carl andre

I was Assistant Director at the Hudson River Museum in 1964 when E C
Goossen suggested we put on the first Minimal Art exhibition, entitled
“Eight Young Artists.”

Gene organized and selected the artists, researched and wrote the
introduction, and mounted the show; I raised the funds, transported the
works, published the catalog, arranged the reception and photographed
same. The color pictures I took were under adverse conditions (available light
with no flash) and not printable at that time. Since 1964, technology has
advanced whereby I was able, with a great deal of time, trouble and expense,
to have them professionally re-photographed, duplicated, scanned and
re-scanned and finally digitized the to their present condition.
The b+w pictures came out a little better because it was a faster film
but there is still some grain. I managed to save 72 historic images,

Carl Andre constructs 'Cedar Piece"

Carl Andre was one of the founders of the art movement known as Minimal, Systemic, or ABC Art. It is an art that seeks to eliminate everything decorative, extraneous and additive, reducing all components to art's purest elements; it is precise, cerebral and austere rather than accessible. Andre once said that what was beautiful in art was "not that someone is original but that he can find a way of creating in the world the instance of his temperament." His own temperament is close to the tranquil philosophy of Taoism, and many critics refer to his work as "pacific."

hole in space

Galloway, Kit; Rabinowitz, Sherrie
«Hole in Space»

«Hole in Space» was a Public Communication Sculpture [for three days]. On a November evening in 1980 the unsuspecting public walking past the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City, and «The Broadway» department store located in the open air Shopping Center in Century City (Los Angeles), had a surprising counter with each other. Suddenly head-to-toe, life-sized, television images of the people on the opposite coast appeared. They could now see, hear, and speak with each other as if encountering each other on the same sidewalk. No signs, sponsor logos, or credits were posted—no explanation at all was offered. No self-view video monitors to distract from the phenomena of this life–size encounter. [...] «Hole–In–Space» suddenly severed the distance between both cities and created an outrageous pedestrian intersection. There was the evening of discovery, followed by the evening of intentional word-of-mouth rendezvous, followed by a mass migration of families and trans–continental loved ones, some of which had not seen each other for over twenty years.

Let's see now ... there's Andy Grace. Richard Giles, who knows a thing or two about Podcasting, does The Gadget Show.

Les Posen and Anthony Caruana do some thoughtful shows on technology, most of it Mac orientated. And The Bubble and Squeak Show.

Local music fans will probably be missing Caz Gannell's ShitFM. We haven't found any updates since April.

hack podcasting JJJ

What is podcasting?
It's a new way that triple j can automatically send you some of our radio programming to your portable device. To do this, you subscribe to the hack podcast by downloading a small piece of software that manages all of your podcast subscriptions. When connected to the internet, the software searches for the latest edition of the program on our website, and will download it to a folder on your computer, ready for when you next plug in your iPod or other portable device. This means that you don't have to manually search & download for new programs to download on this website. It happens automatically!

Which programs will be podcast?
We'll be uploading a new story every week on Mondays. These stories will be a selection of the best of Hack in 2004 & 2005 - covering a range of topics of interest to young people in Australia & around the world - current affairs, health issues, music, politics and culture. You can see examples of the programs we'll be offering here. Most stories are between 15-29mins long.

beaming up scotty

The ashes of Star Trek actor James Doohan, who died on Wednesday, are to be sent into space at his request. Doohan, who was 85, played engineer Scotty in the original sci-fi series. He died of pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease at his home in Washington. His agent said Doohan and his wife Wende had discussed sending his ashes into space, following those of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry.

The Space Services Inc company said Doohan's ashes could be on a Falcon 1 rocket launching from California's Vandenberg Air Force Base, tentatively scheduled for launch in September. The ashes of Star Trek writer John Meredyth Lucas, who died in 2002, are also set to be on the flight. From the BBC

Thinking of Heinlein's "Requiem" written in 1939 and still one of my all time best SF short stories - along with Asimov's "Nightfall".

Harriman's final resting place was lying in his space suit in the lunar vacuum, illuminated by the light of the rising earth. Heinlein had a sea burial.

Burial Place: Ashes scattered into the Pacific Ocean near Santa Cruz.

Heinlein's "Requiem"

"The Man Who Sold the Moon" 1950
A businessman decides to realize his dream of space travel by taking steps himself to make it a commercial possibility. — If in our real sub-lunar world, there is one man who arguably did more than any other to educate and persuade the American public about Luna and space travel, that man is Heinlein himself.
Robert A. Heinlein truly may be called The Man Who Sold the Moon. Short novel; first published in the collection The Man Who Sold the Moon. Sequel is "Requiem", below.

"Requiem" 1939
A short but moving follow-up to "The Man Who Sold the Moon", set years later.

Delos D. Harriman: Business tycoon who inspired and largely funded many space-related endeavors, including the first trip to the moon. Harriman is mentioned indirectly in most of the Future History stories, mostly in businesses and institutions bearing his name. In "Requiem", he secretly financed a moon rocket to take him personally to the Moon, launching in spite of legal attempts to stop him; and died shortly after landing on the lunar surface.

Harriman Scholarships: is mentioned as a program financed by his investments in lunar companies. http://www.heinleinsociety.org/concordance/books/req_hc.html

scorsese does dylan

An Arena documentary on musician Bob Dylan directed by Martin Scorsese is among BBC Two's forthcoming highlights.

No Direction Home - Bob Dylan features new interviews with the reclusive musician and unseen footage from his early life and peak creative period. Scorsese is a fan of Dylan's music and made the show with US broadcaster PBS. It will air simultaneously in the UK and US. BBC Two controller Roly Keating called it "a remarkable coup"

Viola by night – ART-TALKS-FILMS-MUSIC

Go to the Getty Bill Viola: The Passions website

The National Gallery of Australia presents Bill Viola: The Passions, a mesmerising exhibition of recent works by the internationally-renowned American video and sound installation artist. Organised by the J Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles – then shown in London and Madrid – Bill Viola: The Passions is on display in Canberra only, until 6 November. As well as 12 works from The Passions series, the exhibition includes Five Angels for the Millennium 2001, an all-enveloping environment of sight and sound.

Since the 1970s Viola’s videos and installations have dealt with themes of perception, memory and self-awareness. In 1998, during a period of study at the Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles, Viola immersed himself in the artistic conventions of expression. The results of this research – encounters with old master paintings, and with theories of emotional expression – led him to the challenge of depicting ambiguous or mixed emotions. In The Passions, an ongoing series begun in 2000, Viola tackles one of the oldest problems in art: how to convey the power and complexity of human feelings. Using new technology, he examines the manifestations of emotions, through silence, extreme slow-motion, and psychologically-gripping depictions of the faces and bodies of his performers.

street dogs

Hello, and welcome to Bangkok Street Dogs, my first foray into the blogging world (I abhor the term 'blogosphere'). My name is Casanova, and I'm a 3 year old male mongrel who lives near the Klong Toey market in Bangkok, Thailand. The purpose of this blog is to document the lives of several prominent characters of the Bangkok Street Dog community.

robot graffiti

GraffitiWriter is a tele-operated field programable robot which employs a custom built array of spray cans to write linear text messages on the ground at a rate of 15 kilometers per hour. The printing process is similar to that of a dot matrix printer. GraffitiWriter can be deployed in any highly controlled space or public event from a remote location.

black shoals | information galaxies

Last year in Copenhagen at Nikolaj there was an excellent installation

Black Shoals Stock Market Planetarium is an art project created by
Joshua Portway and Lise Autogena.

The project takes the form of a darkened room with a domed ceiling upon which a computer display is projected, like a planetarium. Audiences are immersed in a world of real-time stock market activity, represented as the night sky, full of stars that glow as trading takes place on particular stocks.

BLACK SHOALS STOCK MARKET PLANETARIUM

Black Shoals Stock Market Planetarium is an animated night sky that is also a live representation of the world’s stock markets, with each star representing a traded company. Fed by massive streams of live financial information, the stars glimmer and pulse, immediately flickering brighter whenever their stock is traded anywhere in the world. The stars slowly move across the sky, clustering together or drifting apart in response to the shifting affinities of their respective companies, growing or shrinking as the company’s fortunes change. Digital creatures, a form of artificial life, inhabit this world, feeding on the light released by the stars, breeding, dying and slowly evolving – while trying to learn to live in this strange artificial ecology into which they’ve been born.

MECHANISM OF GALAXY

The galaxy space in Ryukyu ALIVE consists of many stars (= icons). The icons represent individual Web pages of Wonder Okinawa. If a user accesses a certain Web page, the corresponding icon will jump towards the outermost rim of the galaxy. Un-accessed pages will gradually be drawn towards the center of the galaxy, and will eventually be absorbed and become invisible. Changes in the galaxy due to the "jumping" and "absorption" of icons show the overall usage status of Wonder Okinawa i.e., what the user is seeing.
Icons outside the galaxy represent lately accessed information
