Air Polluter

Air Polluter is an interactive smell installation which allows the visitor to decide in how far he or she contributes to pollution of the air. By means of a control panel at the start of the installation, visitors can activate good as well as bad smells. This subdivision into two so called Smell Fields is based on the socially accepted appreciation of the various smells.Visit also: www.airpolluter.info and www.brakkegrond.nl

Air Polluter is an interactive fragrance installation where the visitor himself can stipulate to what extent he or she to air clogging does. By means of a control panel one can activate good and bad fragrances at the beginning of the installation both. That sub-chapter in two so-called Smell Fields relies on the social appreciation of the different fragrances. Thus the clean Smell Field ` contain neat fragrances. To smell that experiences people generally as pleasant. To this end nature fragrance substances hear such as grass fragrance, fragrances, flower fragrances and ground fragrances, feeding fragrance substances (vlees-en fish fragrances to artificial taste substances and aromas, prepared of fruit fragrances and verse), parfums (among which also fragrance substances for wasproducten and human fragrance substances such as fresh sweat with feromonen (quiff substances). Sweat can in public then generally a negative connotation has, but generally becomes in the private life as agreeably or stimulating experiences when it concerns a family member or geliefde. The ` dirty fragrances from the Dirty Smell Field contain among others exhaust gases, rubber link fragrance, asphalt fragrance, polluted oil, fuels, osmogenen, fermentaties and excrements. At entering the tentoonstelling one gets an empty cap bottle of 50 cl. which can be filled with composed air at the terminus of the fragrance installation. There other visitors also the possibility has to smell to activate or at deactiveren, the visitor has only a restricted control concerning the eventual result.

An exhibition about contemporary art on the streets.

On the 3th of June 2007, the Amsterdam Treehouse gallery will harvest, for a month, the current and next generation artists from the streets. In this month the Treehouse gallery will not only show the works of these artists but they will also reflect on the lifestyle of the artists and their subculture. This exhibition will show how the artists get inspired by everything that happens around them; music, fashion, politics, the streets, Amsterdam and the world.

A subculture consists of inspiration. A subculture is inspiration. Throughout the years subcultures have been at the very beginning of hypes. Bands in garages, skateboarders in empty pools, hip hoppers at block parties and graffiti artists on the subways. Examples of subcultures that undisputable caused great hypes.

At the moment graffiti and street art are also living their hype. But how did it come to this? What made it become a hype? How did it use to be? What is going on right now at this moment? Where will it all end? Questions that the twenty invited artists to 'an aerosol odyssey' will try to answer with this exhibition. Photographers, graffiti writers, fashion designers and street artists have therefore been invited to take part in this exhibition.

The exhibition is being curated by: Laser 3.14, Tique, Tiquestar, Recal en Mike Clark.

The Netherlands Media Art Institute is pleased to annouce an open call for the fall 2007 round of its Artist in Residence (AiR) program.

The AiR programme at the Netherlands Media Art Institute aims to support the exploration and development of new work in digital/interactive/network media and technology based arts practice. The residency provides time and resources to artists in a supportive environment to facilitate the creation of new work that is produced from an open source perspective. We encourage a cross disciplinary and experimental approach. This is a practice based residency designed to enable the development and completion of a new work.

Our focus for this open call is on open source interactive
* installation art, in which the following occurs:
* interaction between tools and/or software
* interaction between tools and artwork
* interaction between audience and artwork

The Netherlands Media Art Institute offers an open environment with technical assistance and an active advisory board which will give feedback and support in technical, conceptual and presentation issues. There is access to studio and exhibition equipment,
technical support from the Institute’s staff and production help from interns. The technical staff is specialized and has good contacts with programmers of the following software, a.o.: PD/PDP, Blender, Dynebolic, Linux. We expect the artist to have knowledge and insight in the technical realization of the concept.

It is integral to the mission of the AiR program that artists participate in presenting their work in a public form appropriate to their project. This can include gallery installations, demonstrations of research in progress, panel discussions, on-line projects, or multimedia performances, in addition to open studio events and workshops. For this reason we ask that artists include in their proposal possible examples of how they might like to present their work publicly.

At this moment the Netherlands Media Art Institute provides in travel costs. It doesn’t provide accommodation for artists living outside of Amsterdam. However, we are willing to help the search but cannot guarantee a place for living.

Banksy Paris Hilton CD

In August 2006 42 stores in the UK were restocked by Banksy with 500 reworked versions of Paris Hilton's debut CD. Paris's album, widely regarded as being unhindered by talent, was until this point looking a dead cert for the pound shop. But suddenly it got a whole new lease of life with up to five extra copies being sold.

There's a great video showing how this whole caper was pulled off on Youtube.

The CD itself contains a sampled track with titles such as "why Am I Famous", What Have I Done" and "What Am I For" listed on the cover. The remixing is credited as Banksy and DM - a reference to Danger Mouse who is the producer behind the second Gorillaz album, the Grey Album and Gnarls Barkley.

Inside the cover the doctored pictures have new slogans splashed across them including "Life Wasn't Meant To Be Fair", "90% of success is just showing up" and "Every time someone asks me how I am I hesitate for a little bit too long".

Anyone picking a copy up intending to buy the real Paris Hilton album shouldn't be too disappointed - the first one sold on Ebay allegedly went for £750.

STATUS: All probably now long gone from the shelves of Britain's high street retailers.

This interdisciplinary conference will address issues surrounding the achievements, cultural status and thematic concerns of animation and comics. Until comparatively recently the fields of animation and comics have received little serious critical attention in the English speaking world. Both have been regarded as second class media which were ‘below critical radar’. Since the 1980s writings and research on animation (Crafton, Cannemaker, Bendazzi, Wells) and the comic (Barker, Sabin, Gravett) have begun to recuperate the reputation of these media, both through a thorough examination of their history, and a critical assessment of their aesthetic and cultural value.
There is still a vast amount of work to be done in these areas (and also on the relationship between both media and the live action film). This two day conference will bring together current research in these areas and indicate directions that future research might take.

Papers are invited on a wide range of topics, including:

artist residency - Second Life.

The Australia Council for the Arts is offering up to $20,000 for a collaborative artist residency in the virtual world of Second Life.

The aim of the residency is to offer Australian artists and writers the opportunity to creatively and critically explore new interactive, virtual platforms.

The residency allows for a collaborative team of up to three people (including a writer, musician/sound artist and digital visual media practitioner) to develop inter-disciplinary artwork in Second Life.

Applications will only be accepted from teams who fulfil all the residency requirements, including having the necessary artform experience. Artists or writers who have professional experience in more than one of the required artform areas can include this as part of their submission.

Program purpose
The Second Life artist residency is an initiative of the Literature Board, Music Board and Inter-Arts Office of the Australia Council.

The residency is ‘in-world’ and requires artists and writers to explore the possibilities of inter-disciplinary literary, music/sound art and digital visual media practices.

The successful team will develop new artistic in-world practices and comment on the social and cultural layers that have evolved in Second Life.

Key requirements of the project are a clear strategy for harnessing both in-world and ‘real life’ audiences and developing public exhibition opportunities for the artwork in Australia.

The main objectives of the program are to:

Provide opportunities for artists and writers to develop art that challenges and explores the aesthetic, social, political and cultural realities of Second Life
Encourage collaborations between artists and writers working across literature, music/sound art and digital visual media to develop high quality, experimental arts practices in Second Life
Application closing date

The audiovisual installation/performance TEMPEST draws its name from a U.S government code word for a set of standards for limiting electric or electromagnetic radiation emanations from electronic equipment such as microchips, monitors or printers.[1]

In 1985, Wim van Eck published the first unclassified technical analysis of the security risks of emanations from computer monitors.[2]

Because of his research radiation from computer monitors is sometimes called "Van Eck Radiation" and the associated surveillance technology "Van Eck Phreaking". "Van Eck Phreaking" means that computer screen content can be reconstructed remotely by picking up the emitted EM-field of the computer screen.

Any electronic device that is switched on (a mobile, a laptop, a GPS receiver) generates constant electromagnetic emissions, even if it is on standby. British designers Anthony Dunne and Fiona Raby called this "The Secret Life of Electronic Objects", the perception that the activity of electronic technology is not transparent or subject to the way it is used by consumers; below the friendly interfaces hide autonomous processes with their own dynamics.

"Tempest" utilizes the basic principles of the "Van Eck Phreaking" technique to transform purely generative graphic into a tight and intense composition of sound, noise and light.

Following a long tradition of subverting military technologies for creative purposes, Erich Berger creates an audiovisual piece in which the relationship between images and sounds is precisely determined by the electromagnetic emissions produced by the monitor.

The graphics that appear on the screen in "Tempest" produce radio waves which, when captured using various radios tuned to different AM frequencies, become the sharp and vibrant sounds that go along with the images.

Grace Slick has always said that White Rabbit was intended as a slap toward parents who read their children stories such as Alice in Wonderland (in which Alice uses several drug-like substances in order to change herself) and then wondered why their children grew up to do drugs.


"White Rabbit" is a psychedelic rock song from Jefferson Airplane's 1967 hit album Surrealistic Pillow, also released as a single.

Grace Slick has always said that White Rabbit was intended as a slap toward parents who read their children stories such as Alice in Wonderland (in which Alice uses several drug-like substances in order to change herself) and then wondered why their children grew up to do drugs. For Grace and others in the '60s, drugs were an inevitable part of mind-expanding and social experimentation. With its enigmatic lyrics, "White Rabbit" became one of the first songs to sneak drug references past censors on the radio.

The art market thrives. The question exceeds the offer and sale prices bang omhoog. sale by auction houses break with the rule half-measure of the bell record, draw always larger (and richer) publicly and the quantity art grants grow annually. After a successful editie in 2006, the city forms again the plan of the museum, with as museum rooms among others the counter, the urban museum CS, Foam_Fotografiemuseum, SMBA, W139 and smart project Space.

Art Amsterdam are the being correct heart where every visitor gets a free passe-partout that access grant to all ` to rooms of the temporary museum Amsterdam.

Every separate institute makes an extra programme with work of artists from the stable of a galerie on Art Amsterdam, brief installations, rondleidingen and video programmes. The Scottish artist Ross Birrell is known for his conceptual performances, which he carries out all over the world and records on video. The works being shown here, The Interpretation of Dreams (2001), Brave New World (2001) and The Destiny of the World (2001), are part of the series Envoy(1998-2002). The tapes, which often last less than a minute, are made at places that symbolize historic ideologies and utopias. The objects that are central to the videos are also similarly charged.

The artist believes that the Big Stories of history are being lost, and brings them to our attention again in these works. Birrell does that by personally taking a book or other object to a location that has been, or could have been important historically. In The Interpretation of Dreams (2001), Brave New World (2001) and The Destiny of the World (2001) these symbolically charged books are thrown into the sea or a river.

The books that he chooses for his performances are critical of society, deal with an ideal society, or have had great influence on the thinking of mankind. Birrell threw Freud’s The Interpretation of Dreams into the Gulf of Finland. Huxley’s Brave New World landed on the Norwegian/Russian border, and The Destiny of the World: The Socialist Shape of Things to Come by Shakhnazarov was thrown into the Norwegian Barents Sea.

Guadalupe (2003) is an audio installation comprised of sounds from a busy public space, a man who sings the number I'm so Lonesome I Could Cry, and a woman who inquires about the bus to Guadalupe. This audio work was originally heard in a Texas bus station. It is a story about the wish to travel to unfamiliar places with exotic names, and calls to mind desires, and the urge to escape. This audio work refers to the search for places that can never be found.

The work of the Scottish artist Susan Philipsz starts with the relations among sound, space and subjectivity. Philipsz is interested in the emotional and psychological qualities of sound, particularly in popular music, and how this can alter the individual’s consciousness. In her work she goes in search of ways to stir up and copy subjective memories in the listener. Simple melodies temporarily alter the image that the listener has of him or herself in a particular time and space. She often uses her own voice in the audio installations, for which a familiar pop number or folk song is the starting point, thus evoking both feelings of nostalgia, and slight disassociation at the unfamiliar voice. Her work is often installed in public spaces such as bus stations, tunnels, a supermarket or a garden. The selection of these locations adds an extra layer of meaning to the artwork. Just as quickly as the sound arrives, it disappears again a couple of minutes later. The two audio works by Philipsz are therefore not installed in obvious ‘art places’, but in two public passageways at the institute, in a corridor and in a stairwell.

For the installation Songs Sung in the First Person on Themes of Release, Sympathy and Longing (2003) Philipsz sang and recorded four popular numbers by Gram Parsons, Soft Cell, Teenage Fanclub and The Smiths a cappella. This sound work refers to aural voyeurism, and unintentionally overhearing someone else’s secrets. It is about listening with your soul, not with your ears.

In the love story Me+ (2004) the artist worked with the minimal graphic means. A small white cross moves against an otherwise black, empty screen, then multiplies itself to become two crosses that dance around the screen together, only to then disappear together. The text was written and whispered by Anouk De Clercq herself. The music that one hears in the background was composed by Anton Aeki, who also comes from Belgium. As the viewer, you become conscious of the influence of the text and electronic music on the two-dimensional image. As a result, the graphic, flat black field with the transitory, minimal crosses suggests more than that: an intimate love story in a three-dimensional space that seem to be an infinite universe.

In her predominately black and white videos, the Flemish artist Anouk De Clercq is seeking confrontations among image, text, music, dance, architecture and graphic elements. She explores the possibilities for creating a virtual world with the computer. In her work she uses a digital, visual language that is based on that of the computer and the screen: pixels, cursor and text. De Clercq produces fleeting mental images: virtual, gray landscapes that constantly change. They are sensory inner landscapes that belong to a fantasy world. De Clercq’s work is a form of escape from reality, although it also contains traces of the same reality. By creating a virtual world the artist tries to obtain more insight into our ordinary environment. Ultimately, all Anouk De Clerq’s works carry the viewer along on a journey through mental landscapes.

1/1 is a video work which, in a poetic manner, recalls the early stages of the transient medium of video, and points to optimism with regard to the present state of affairs and expectations for the future. A video cassette is filmed in grainy black and white images. A hand investigates the object, opens the cover, pulls the videotape out and holds it firmly between thumb and forefinger. When the fingers are rubbed along the tape they produce a squeaking sound. At the same time the fingers which seek to, as it were, ‘read’ the magnetic strip on the tape, are damaging the images on it.. The image of a butterfly that is to be seen now and then becomes increasingly less clear as the tape is damaged. Ultimately the tape is pulled apart and, now in a clear image, the butterfly is seen flying away.

The video works of the Korean artist Seoungho Cho are poetic visualizations of his subconscious. Because in his work he proceeds primarily from intuition, he terms himself an intuïtionist. The genesis of each new work is an experiment. Anything that calls up a visual/mental image for him can serve as the point of departure for the experiment, such as for instance a poem, music or a video clip, but also simply the bustling life on the street. Dream-like associative sequences of images that fade into one another, overlap each other, and advance and rewind at various speeds are characteristic of his work..

Space and time seem to be cancelled out, as in a dream. Image, sound, music and text form a fascinating collage in his video installations, blurring the boundaries between reality and fantasy.

Furthermore, a temporary and idiosyncratic café dishes up black-and-white snacks.

Dark Mirror
The free group exhibition ‘Dark Mirror’ coincides ‘Snapshot (In Time)’. The exhibition explores man’s social conditioning and compares it to animal instinct. Internationally renowned artists show the borderline between the rational human being and the animal creature. The twilight zone where emotions and instincts reign and social conditioning is momentarily peripheral. The participating artists all react to their environments in very self-willed ways and highlight social codes, nature and the animal in their works. Works are shown by Carlos Amorales, Emmanuelle Antille, Marcus Coates, Mike Stubbs, Mark Wallinger, and works from collections of Rick Buckley, Charlemagne Palestine, Jeremy Drummond, Sebastian Diaz Morales, Sterling Ruby, Joanna Rytel and Servaas.

Sentient Creatures lectures

May brings a new series of Sentient Creatures lectures within the KillerTV-programme, organized by Waag Society and Graham Smith. Eight international speakers will show new developments in art and technology, internet and robotics. By using an advanced videoconferencing technology, some speakers will be virtually present on the Telepresence Chair. This form of communication is one of the innovative web applications that can make the human presence almost tangible.

The lectures can be followed through a live video stream on killertv.nl, participate through a chat and upload relevant material. This Spring four speakers are programmed, in the Autumn the other four will follow.

Such luxury! An artist who loses track of things for you. Or, on the contrary, do you find them again? Toine Klaassen himself, for one, is not averse to a bit of paradox in his Laboratorium Voor Hedendaagse Archeologie (Laboratory for Contemporary Archaeology). Among a collection of boxes and rubbish he shows his films which in a context like this one, would seem meaningful. But is that not always the point? Toine Klaassen believes in experiments because… for him it is the only way. Will you loose track with him?

In 2003 Ives Maes started on his Recyclable Refugee Camp project, an ironic proposal for bio-degradable housing units. It is composed of different organic structures such as shelters, latrines and water-wells built along the norms of the UNHCR, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees). For P.R.I.V.A.C.Y. he developed a simple modular system of cardboard boxes that can be assembled into small private units so that even in refugee camps privacy becomes possible. The separate parts of the system are not only re-cyclable, but also easily and quickly transported, assembled and disassembled.

But Ives Maes emphatically situates his pressing mental exercise about ecology and the refugee problem within the non-functionalistic free haven of an autonomous art practice. Seemingly ethical and committed art as the expression of a radical, anti-social form of acumen.

Dirk van Lieshout works with scale-models, video and installations. His works ‘serve’, among other things, as instruments to investigate the public space. With Billboardscape he evokes a temporary encampment, layer upon layer, projection upon projection, so that original meanings disappear. Each billboard had its own meaning, but Dirk van Lieshout plays on the disconnection of meaning, and thus creates new stories. By taking these billboards out of their urban environment, he also tries to safeguard the city from such visual violence. Objects in the installation run along a fixed track along a pre-programmed route.

Kris Vleeschouwer causes the visitors to be on their guard. Time and space continually interlink in his ingenious installations. And this happens in a coincidental, haphazard and blind-folded way, entirely outside the spectators’ grasp. The only certainty the spectator has, is that something is about to happen. But where, and when, and how, and why....

In Glass Works (zie picture), too, the spectator’s experience is in the hands of a distant coincidence. A tall rack with 10,000 glass jars and bottles is connected to five bottle banks in the area. Every time somebody throws a bottle into the bottle bank, one item falls off the rack.

On the occasion of Recyclage De Brakke Grond spares no expense on Friday 18.05.07 and Saturday 19.05.07 with a multi-disciplinary, live, two-day event, in which literally all the senses will be addressed.

Both evenings you can enjoy the gastronomic recycling of Irma Firma’s tasteful views on an Eetbaar Amsterdam (Edible Amsterdam): straight from the canal or the flower-bed on to your plate. Sara Van Hee, Julie Van den Berghe, An De Ridder, Stef Meul, Benny Ceuppens and Lucas De Man all lead double lives. Besides being free-lance receptionists at De Brakke Grond they are students at the Theaterschool in Amsterdam. With theatre, performance and dance they will be doing their own thing with the artworks in the exhibition. More visual fun is to be had in the ‘found footage films’ by video and film maker Karen Vanderborght. And in collaboration with art magazine Mister Motley we will be giving you, too, food for thought.

But no two evenings are the same in De Brakke Grond. On 18.05.07 we will be joining forces with Brussels’ trendiest vintage boutique Idiz Bogam for a genuine fashion happening. Your own wardrobe, too, deserves a star part: bring your own vintage item of clothing and our couturiers will work magic with it, turning it on the spot into a real design piece. On 19.05.07 we will clip you round the ears and eyes with Teufelsberg, a unique film concert by Jean Delouvroy and Johannes Braun. Contemporary classical, adventurous electronics and live VJ image mixing merge into a compact reflection, full of character, on the recyclability of a mythical rubbish-mountain in Berlin. The artist, VJ and film maker Johannes Braun is one of the driving forces of the Berlin media collective JUTOJO. Composer/musician Jean Delouvroy wins prizes with contemporary classical compositions, writes soundtracks for dance performances and films, and gives regular solo concerts with experimental sets of electronics. Guest musician is the violinist Paul Klinck.

Strange Culture

The surreal nightmare of internationally-acclaimed artist and professor Steve Kurtz began when his wife Hope died in her sleep of heart failure. Police arrived, became suspicious of Kurtz’s art, and called the FBI.

Within hours the artist was detained as a suspected "bioterrorist" as dozens of agents in hazmat suits sifted through his work and impounded his computers, manuscripts, books, his cat, and even his wife’s body.

Today Kurtz and his long-time collaborator Dr. Robert Ferrell, former Chair of the Genetics Department at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health, await a trial date.

  • M/C Journal

    M/C Journal (which began in July 1998 as "M/C — A Journal of Media and Culture") is a fully blind peer-reviewed academic journal, but also remains open to submissions and responses from anyone on the Internet. Each issue is organised around a one word theme, and is edited by one or two editors with a particular interest in that theme. The editors change for each issue.     M/C Reviews, which launched in September 1998, is a companion piece to M/C Journal. It is neither simply a sub-section, nor completely independent of it; you, the reader, decide how you want to see it.
