Review - Leadership in Gaming

Utrecht University and IBM organize a symposium, hosted by Eduverse, on ‘The Play Element of Learning Leadership’ in De Balie in Amsterdam, June 24th.

Students from the MA programs New Media & Digital Culture and Game & Media Technology (Utrecht University) present their findings on leadership in online games such as EVE Online and World of Warcraft. The startingpoint for their research are studies done by Seriosity and IBM, which can be found here. Guest speakers, live and virtual, will add their views to the discussion. Besides in person, the event can be attended inworld, as it will be broadcast live in Second Life.

Last night I watched the live streaming of the conference at the de balie

The subject was Leadership in Gaming.

One of the speakers was Tony O'Driscoll
http://www.youtube.com/user/WadaTripp

Dr. Tony O'Driscoll (aka Wada Tripp) describes the evolution from Web 1.0 to Web 2.0 to Web3D.

========================
Whilst there were a number of informative presentations, I thought the symposium failed in two key areas.

Firstly, the subject matter was MMORPG's, that is
(Massively multiplayer online role-playing games) such as World of Warcraft, Eve and Second Life. Whilst the subject of the changing nature of the web was covered comprehensively, the history of gaming was completely omitted. MMORPGs evolved from the MUDs and MOOs of the nineties. In 1995/6 I spent a lot of time in Lambda MOO and considerable researching the media and its social implications. What I found at the symposium was that participants were discussing phenomena of MMORPGs without acknowledging the early research into multiplayer internet communities. This is an issue that I have raised before.

When I revisited RPGs after a ten year break, I discovered that SL, for example, is simply Lambda MOO with pictures and an economy. All the issues regarding communication and representation existed and were discussed in Lambda, the creative factor existed in the programming of objects and in spaces. You couldn't fly in Lambda, but you could create a room and an online character and invite people into your space to interact.

Initially Lambda was quite geeky, you had to have geek skills to participate so the participants tended to be mature and educated. Then, when internet browsers became available and the media made it popular with teenagers, the interesting people left.

I felt that a large part of the material presented as "new discoveries in game theory" were already covered in the overlooked MUD/MOO literature.

The second area where I felt the symposium failed was in that of gender. At the very end of the program a student presented a paper on gender bias in World of Warcraft. She had spent time playing as both male and female characters. Again, no reference was made to the existing research from roleplaying games such as Dungeons and Dragons, or from the early internet RPGs. This was also evident in the post presentation discussion.

I've experimented in both areas. As Dungeon Master I have presented my players with enchanted armour that reversed their gender and then observed the results. Very amusing. In Lambda I played many characters of various genders and types, I had one called "YourMum" who entered the room and checked to see if you were wearing clean underwear. Also very amusing.

The paper on World of Warcraft gender bias was very interesting and well presented and generated the most discussion. Where the conference failed with regard to gender was in its marginalisation. The only speaker who addressed gender as a leadership issue was this one. And this is supposed to be a post-feminist society.

Gaming Politics

"NEW YORK -- In the video game that Wafaa Bilal created, his avatar is steely-eyed and hooded, with an automatic rifle at his side, an ammunition belt around his waist, a fuse in his hand and the mien of a knightly suicide-bomber. He is the "Virtual Jihadi."

The Iraqi-born, Chicago-based artist said he adapted his game from an earlier version made by al-Qaeda's media branch to raise questions about Americans' conceptions of the enemy in Iraq.

His work was briefly exhibited Thursday night at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. The game was projected on a giant screen so that one viewer at a time could play -- until administrators shut down the show Friday morning. The institute needed time to review the show's "origin, content and intent," said William N. Walker, a vice president."

Come Out & Play

Friday 28th and Saturday 29th of September, the Come Out & Play Festival will turn Amsterdam into a playground.

Registration will start on September 13th.

Stay informed? mailinglist

Hundreds of players will gather to play different games across the city. The festival gives players and the public the chance to take part in a variety of different urban games. These new-style games turn the city into a playground. We’ll play at all sorts of locations around Amsterdam during PICNIC'07. PacManhattan and Zombie Tag were huge hits in New York last year (see www.comeoutandplay.org/blog/games). The games we’ll play in Amsterdam will be just as large-scale and fun.

Come rediscover the city around you through play. Why a urban games festival, you ask? Fair question. Well, we like innovative use of public space. We like games which make people interact in new ways. We like games that alter your perception of your surroundings. But most importantly, urban games are a great way to have city-size fun.

Come Out & Play will take place September 28-29. Games will occur throughout the day in locations around the Westergasfabriek, Westerpark and the city centre. The Headquarters are at the Westergasfabriek.

Machinima Premiere

What is machinima?

A simple definition would be "Making movies with computer games".

A longer definition is "Machinima is filmmaking within a real-time, 3D virtual environment, often using 3D video-game technologies.
In an expanded definition, it is the convergence of filmmaking, animation and game development. Machinima is real-world filmmaking techniques applied within an interactive virtual space where characters and events can be either controlled by humans, scripts or artificial intelligence." - machinima.org faq

You can read another full description from - Machinimag
It has also been described as "A revolution in film-making", "The mp3 of movies", A "Punk" art-form, and many other things! For me it is a fascinating, and fun, hobby!

What is Machinima Premiere for? To promote the making of machinima movies.

machinima - Sims99.com

Sims99.com was started in January of 2005 as a way to share, rate, and review machinima made with The Sims 2, which was largely unrepresented on other sites. In June of 2005, we opened the site to all forms of machinima, and in June of 2006, we expanded to include user created flash movies, animation, live action short films, and also commercial release movies and DVD on TV, especially with an eye to ratings and reviews.
