Colour Theory

Someone was asking me about colour.

Here's a page of colour theory links

When searching for information about COLOUR, you need to also search for the USA spelling COLOR

Digital Graffiti Tool

This is brilliant for trying out colour schemes.

The Graffiti Creator is a Flash application that allow you to make your own graffiti-styled logotypes and texts. Simply type in a word and hit Enter and out comes a designed font ready for you to convert into beautiful art. Use an array of various tools to enhance your logotype to make it really special and unique.

try using PRINT SCREEN instead of the print facility - then you can edit the image before you print it.

Join up and compete against other artists for the title of Battle Master. Each month we hold a new contest, your job is to create a graffiti piece of the word that we announce.

Dutch and the art of bicycle maintenence.

This is what a bicycle looks like after someone backs over it with a truck. I was there when the owner found it. Not a happy camper.

A found a webpage meant to introduce you to the dutch language and culture. I'm not making any comment about choice of material, but I did nearly fall off my chair laughing.

"Criteria for the judging of quality in a 'Graffiti Art' piece, is very similar to a lot of criteria used in other forms of formal art criticism. Other types of critical readings can also be used and a combination of these methodologies is always preferable. For Graffiti Art is not just an art form, it is also a culture. To properly review the work one must consider each piece in its full context. If the residue of the painting process, the painting itself is to be critiqued, it can be done on formal qualities alone though. These qualities always include can control (the painter's hand), colour and other forms of stylistic innovation, flow, funk, the nature of the site and is the work of an illegal or legal nature. These qualities must be appropriate for the form that it is within 'Graffiti Art' and for the type of artist involved."

HOW TO READ GRAFFITI was the title of the Masters paper written by Jason Dax Woodward in 1997. The work was a starting point for understanding some of the unwritten rules of graffiti. The text can be found at
It was eventually published as part of the Chromopolis book published in Greece. 1998.

Editorial: Relocation to Asia

Its now official.

In the next couple of months The Aviary will be relocating to Asia. We have new premises in Taipei, Taiwan and we will be transferring our activities from Europe to Asia. What this means is that there will be a reduction in the amount of posts during the relocation, and once we are up and running again there will be a shift of emphasis to Taiwan material.

You might want to learn Mandarin as this will be necessary for reading many of the websites.

If you have first hand experience or contacts with Taiwan, we would love to hear about it.

If you live in Taiwan and can show us the hall of fame, we'd like to meet you.

Here's looking forward to networking and collaborations between Australia, Amsterdam and Taiwan.

Artfully yours

You think this sh*t it's all good?
To the cowboys that roll out like Clint Eastwood

Get lost in town, end up in the lost and found
Eye witnesses?
You must be crazy, we don't speak english, we speak chinese
And the only popo we know,
Is the pigs on the hook by the window
Each time they harass me I wanna explode
We should ride the train for free, we built the railroads

1984 - by George Orwell

Outside, even through the shut window-pane, the world looked cold. Down in the street little eddies of wind were whirling dust and torn paper into spirals, and though the sun was shining and the sky a harsh blue, there seemed to be no colour in anything, except the posters that were plastered everywhere. The blackmoustachio'd face gazed down from every commanding corner. There was one on the house-front immediately opposite. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU, the caption said, while the dark eyes looked deep into Winston's own. Down at streetlevel another poster, torn at one corner, flapped fitfully in the wind, alternately covering and uncovering the single word INGSOC. In the far distance a helicopter skimmed down between the roofs, hovered for an instant like a bluebottle, and darted away again with a curving flight. It was the police patrol, snooping into people's windows. The patrols did not matter, however. Only the Thought Police mattered.

Behind Winston's back the voice from the telescreen was still babbling away about pig-iron and the overfulfilment of the Ninth Three-Year Plan. The telescreen received and transmitted simultaneously. Any sound that Winston made, above the level of a very low whisper, would be picked up by it, moreover, so long as he remained within the field of vision which the metal plaque commanded, he could be seen as well as heard. There was of course no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any given moment. How often, or on what system, the Thought Police plugged in on any individual wire was guesswork. It was even conceivable that they watched everybody all the time. But at any rate they could plug in your wire whenever they wanted to. You had to live -- did live, from habit that became instinct -- in the assumption that every sound you made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every movement scrutinized.

Byrdsong - Language Blog

This is to announce the new addition to the Aviary. Its about learning languages online.

There are links to language websites, but the main purpose of the site is to act as a repository of language videos for practicing pronunciation.

There are Dutch lessons and Mandarin Chinese to start with. We anticipate that we will be travelling in Asia, so the Mandarin will be necessary. With the Olympics coming, the Chinese entries should be useful to those planning on attending.

The site is called Byrdsong.
