Stockholm Street Art Tours

Stockholm Street Art Tours 2007

Our guide is Tobias Barenthin Lindblad, an editor who has worked on several books on Scandinavian street art.

Because street art in Stockholm tends not to last too long, it’s in the dark caverns of the city, under bridges and underground stations, that walls become the artists’ galleries. Some, such as Hop Louie, known for his overtly political stencils, Klister Peter and Akay have built up reputations and followings.

http://www.hoplouie.com/
http://www.akayism.org/

Communications consultant Benke Carlsson recently published a book entitled “Street Art Stockholm”. He became interested as an observer rather than a participant, and sees his book more as a view from the outside. “Many people’s first reaction to street art is that it’s vandalism, but I feel that we need to have something more than advertisements decorating our streets,” he says. “Street culture is a means of expression and doesn’t necessarily have to be pretty. It’s about who has the right to public space.”

Ada Lovelace Day

Ada Lovelace Day was conceived of and promoted by Suw Charman-Anderson as a way of "bringing women in technology to the fore". It succeded in motivating nearly 2000 people to publish a blog post about a woman in technology whom they admired.

In support of Ada Lovelace Day we invited women working in media arts to join the NetBehaviour.org email list for a week, in March '09. They were invited to post information about their own work alongside the work of other women who had inspired them in their own practice. Some names came up a number of times but with different stories and for very different reasons. NetBehaviour provided a context for sharing and discussing influences and tracing connections: artistic, practical, theoretical, technical, historical, personal. For readability the list displayed here does not include all of the discussion but this can be traced back through the NetBehaviour archives.

Some contributors were anxious about the many excellent people who may have been missed out. We know this is not a definitive survey or list but it is an excellent resource and just one possible starting point for anyone wanting to know more about women working in media art.

Nancy Spero - De Appel

19 Apr — 22 Jun 2008 Exhibition
Nancy Spero "Spero Speaks"
Opening: Friday 18 April, from 6pm onwards in de Appel
Curator: Roel Arkesteijn (NL)

Nancy Spero (Cleveland, Ohio, 1926) ranks as one of the most important artists of her generation. To mark the release of the unique publication “Codex Spero. Nancy Spero Selected Writings and Interviews 1950-2008” compiled by curator Roel Arkesteijn (Scheveningen, 1974), de Appel will host a solo exhibition by this prominent American artist on the first floor of its premises.

The publication,* issued in collaboration with Roma Publications was conceived as an ‘artistic testament’ and as such, differs fundamentally from other monographs. This ‘radical manifest’ contains a choice selection of artist’s texts, personal statements, notes and interviews. The exhibition includes exemplary works from different phases of Spero’s lengthy artistic career. The diptych sheds new light on the ‘persona’ Spero, as artist, but also as activist, feminist and mentor.

* "Codex Spero. Nancy Spero Selected Writings and Interviews 1950-2008” (20 X 27 cm, integrally bound, 192 pages) Soon on sale in de Appel or on order via www.orderromapublications.org

http://printaustralia.blogspot.com/2007/10/if-i-cant-dance-antwerp.html

Video Speakers Corner

At the initiative of bolwerK in
Antwerp, we are screening
reactions to the quote by Emma Goldman
– “If I can’t dance, I don’t
want to be part of your
revolution”– in the form of a
visual contribution. These will be
screened by means of a mobile Video
Speakers Corner on Thursday evening, 6
December, during the Antwerp
Nocturne.

The Video Speakers Corner is one of the
public moments in a self-organized
alternative program initiated by
bolwerK. To empower the initiative a
workshop (FC Poppesnor), local radio
interventions (with miss Tigra) and a
concert (Gynaika Inbetween Space) are
planned, stimulating exchange between
the local Antwerp stakeholders and
their network.

SUN 28.10.07
11.30am - 6pm SYMPOSIUM
Location: de Balie [Kleine Gartmanplantsoen 10 Amsterdam, NL]

In the symposium we want to join with a
series of thinkers and cultural
practitioners in exploring the current
political potential of feminism in the
age of globalization.

Can its methods
of enquiry, critique, and activism aid
in thinking about contemporary
identity? We are interested in thinking
about what would the issues be for a
global feminism today.

In the morning
the keynote speaker Rosi Braidotti
will outline the intellectual terrain
from her perspective.

In the afternoon
we open out the debate in relation to
the practice of artists such as Hito
Steyerl. Ruth Noack, who developed an
interesting feminist narrative in
Documenta 12, has been invited to speak
from a curatorial perspective.

Symposium
ZO 28.10 12.00

Art and the Feminist Revolution en beeldend kunstenaar Hito Steyerl. Het symposium wordt geproduceerd door het MuHKA, Huis en Festival a/d Werf en de Appel.

Artist Profile - Vivienne Binns

http://www.anca.canberra.net.au/artist_profile.php?id=59

The work of Vivienne Binns explores what it means to be an artist in Australia with local and European histories, engaging with cultures in the Asia Pacific region. Her abiding interests are the function of art making as a human activity, which occurs in all social groups, and the manifestation s of this through out social environments especially in patterning and surface treatments.
