*transmediale.09 DEEP NORTH*

As part of its online programme, Berlin's festival for art and digital
culture *transmediale.09 DEEP NORTH* will offer a curated package of
live video streams from the House of World Cultures in Berlin from
28 January to 1 February 2009.

Our team will broadcast over 50 hours of conferences, workshops,
performances, film and interviews during the festival. Remote
communities and individuals can interact daily with the festival and its
participants via IRC chat, forums, video conferences and web-streams.
Archive footage will be available on-demand the following day.

You can follow and find more information about the streams at
www.transmediale.de/en/streams-main and post to our forum via
www.transmediale.de/en/forum. Programme details, chat links and
technical information on how to view the streams will be available shortly.

In addition, transmediale.09 has a very limited number of places left on
its free Streaming Workshop, where participants will engage with new
webcasting technologies and Open Source Software before transmitting the
festival live as a hands-on member of the transmediale.09 stream team.
More details on how to apply can be found at
www.transmediale.de/en/transmediale09-streaming-workshop-english.

Gordon Bennett & Basquiat

http://www.ngv.vic.gov.au/gordonbennett/

December 2008 to February 2009
Art Gallery of Western Australia

Since his first major solo exhibition in 1989, Gordon Bennett has achieved international critical acclaim for the complex ways in which his work engages with historical and contemporary questions of cultural and personal identity, with a specific focus on Australia’s colonial past and its postcolonial present.

Bennett’s idiosyncratic art is founded on his critical enquiry into the power and effects of language to structure ideologies, and social and cultural systems. His work has been guided by a postmodernist aesthetic that has enabled him to deconstruct and represent the histories and politics that determine identities and the national and international social landscapes in which, through his work, he seeks to locate a place for himself.

The exhibition will present twenty years of the artist’s work and will bring together many of the Notes to Basquiat paintings and selected works from the Home Décor series. The exhibition will examine the manner in which Bennett’s focus on the disenfranchisement of colonialism resonates globally beyond his specifically Australian context, and the challenge his work makes to political conservatism and social complacency.

Editorial

Christmas is past and the New Year rapidly approaches.

I was asked recently about the drop in posts to the blogs. Both Bellebyrd and Blakkbyrd have less posts this year than previously. 2008 has been an interesting year. Most of the past six months has been taken up with travel and relocations, not to mention learning new languages and the establishment of the Byrdsong language blog.

All this is expected to change in 2009. At present I am surveying my current subscriptions and cleaning the slate for the new year. With a return to Australia there will be a greater coverage of the Australian art scene, and a lesser need to follow the day to day minutiae of Europe.

This month has seen the creation of indexes for Urban art on Blakkbyrd for the past four years, an extensive and time consuming task. Similarly, there are new indexes for Printmaking on Bellebyrd blog. Please enjoy. I intend to write more indexes on new media, art theory and copyright issues. Eventually all the individual themes on the two blogs will be covered.

To all my readers, I wish you the best in the New Year and hope that you will continue to enjoy the blogs in 2009.

This is from the first six months of the Blakkbyrd blog and early in the research and reporting of urban art. In Amsterdam, "the doors" is by Morcky, posted before I met him, similarly "Paris in Flames" is my first reporting of Laser before I met him, and the stencil on Haarlemmerdijk is a Faile that only survived a couple of days before being buffed.

Dear Jane, Are you sure this drawing of a spider is the one I sent you? This spider only has seven legs and I do not feel I would have made such an elementary mistake when I drew it.

Hello, I am back and have read through your emails and accept that despite missing a leg, that drawing of a spider may indeed be the one I sent you. I realise with hindsight that it is possible you rejected the drawing of a spider due to this obvious limb ommission but did not point it out in an effort to avoid hurting my feelings. As such, I am sending you a revised drawing with the correct number of legs as full payment for any amount outstanding. I trust this will bring the matter to a conclusion.

Regards, David.

Dear David, As I have stated, we do not accept drawings in lei of money for accounts outstanding. We accept cheque, bank cheque, money order or cash. Please make a payment this week to avoid incurring any additional fees.

Yours sincerely, Jane Gilles

I understand and will definately make a payment this week if I remember. As you have not accepted my second drawing as payment, please return the drawing to me as soon as possible. It was silly of me to assume I could provide you with something of completely no value whatsoever, waste your time and then attach such a large amount to it.

Regards, David.
