QUIKSAND
'Old School' en nieuwe graffitikunst bij kuS
17 mei t/m 22 juni 2008

Frans Haks († 2006), directeur Groninger Museum

QUIK, CES, REVOLT, TWELVE, LASER 3.14, CAT22, CASROC, MARE 139, IKON, ESOR, FUME, LOIC, BOMBER,GIANT, ATEM, GOZE, OENO, DIZE, WUZE, SAN, MESNAGER, PRO SHUCK, DOES, NASH, CES53, ENES, BEAT, MAZE en SUPERBRETSIG.

Prize for Young Dutch Art Criticism

In May 2008, de Appel, Witte de With and the Fonds BKVB launch the bi-annual Prize for Young Dutch Art Criticism (de Prijs voor de Jonge Kunstkritiek).

The prize is an encouragement award for a new generation of critics and essayists focusing predominantly on contemporary art. The initiators aim to stimulate thorough critical reflection and invest in the future of a qualitative art discourse. The Prize for Young Dutch Art Criticism seeks to act as a counterweight to the reduction of art criticism in the media, emphasizing the importance of the art critic in contemporary society.

The Prize for Young Dutch Art Criticism shares a common goal with lifetime achievement awards given to acknowledged art writers. However, in the Dutch speaking countries, a prize specifically meant to reward and stimulate young talent is lacking. The prize will allow the young laureates to focus intensively on the development of their writing career for an extended period of time.

The prize is meant for writers under the age of 35 and will be awarded every other year in the categories Review (€ 7,500) and Essay (€ 12,500). The winning entries will be published in the Dutch newspaper NRC (NL) and the Flemish weekly Knack (BE).

Applicants for the first edition can submit their articles until 30 June 2008 via the website www.jongekunstkritiek.net. The specifications for the submissions can also be found here.

The texts will be judged on style, coherence, structure, thorough (contextual) information and accessibility.
The jury of the Prize for Young Dutch Art Criticism is chaired by Oscar van den Boogaard (writer) and comprises furthermore Camiel van Winkel (publicist, lecturer at the art academy of Den Bosch), Maria Barnas (writer, artist), Bernard Dewulf (journalist and art critic for Flemish newspaper De Morgen), Edo Dijksterhuis (journalist and art critic for Dutch newspaper het Financieel Dagblad) and Barbara Visser (artist).

The first Prize for Young Dutch Art Criticism will be awarded in October 2008

16 February 2008 - 8 June 2008

German-born British painter Lucian Freud (b. 1922) is famous around the world for his intimate and revealing portraits and nudes. With his keen eye and highly personal approach, he lays bare the hidden feelings and thoughts of his subjects. The aim is not to achieve any superficial or flattering likeness, but to reveal the essence of the subject’s inner being. The results are impressive and extremely private portraits of vulnerable individuals. The first ever Dutch retrospective of this extraordinary and unconventional artist opens on 16 February at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag. It runs until 8 June 2008.

MacDowall, Dr Lachlan (2005) Graffitimedia: How graffiti functions as a model for new media futures .

As emergent forms of design and technology are mobilised for both the archiving of graffiti and graffiti prevention, new media forms are also appropriating graffiti as a model for digital aesthetics and the democratic spatial practices of the contemporary consumer. This paper examines the popularity of graffiti as a model for new media production and the ways in which this interest rewrites the history of graffiti as a form of popular media.

From text recognition in Palm-Pilots to the digital tagging of mobile locative media, the generic practice of graffiti has provided a compelling model for both the aesthetics and function of new technology. “Playground ZEDZbeton 3.0” an outdoor projection by Maurer United Architects projects graffiti images that “emanat[e] architectural power,” producing urban space “as a variable, treacherous terrain.” In John Geraci’s Grafedia interactive media project, graffiti functions as a model for the democratic use of public spaces usually controlled by “companies with big advertising budgets.” It is the qualities compatible with the late capitalist urban subject that are most evident in new media’s appropriation of graffiti: an individualistic, self-promoting, highly-mobile and spatially engaged consumer, literate in popular culture and the transformation of archaic written forms into contemporary visual ones.

Graffiti’s appearance in the branding of new media also makes evident graffiti’s own status as a form of popular media whose global proliferation has been underwritten by the circulation of films, magazines and more recently, the Internet and digital technology.

At the same time however, government and law enforcement organisations have adopted new technology to restrict graffiti production: intelligent security cameras, international information databases, electronic matching of graffiti tags and collation of GIS statistics on graffiti have been among the anti-graffiti measures involving new media technology. New media futures are implied in this ongoing negotiation between graffiti as a model for surveillance and regulation and for democratic engagement in urban spaces.
