Johan Hendrik van Mastenbroek is famous for his attractive paintings of the harbour of Rotterdam. He followed the development of the harbour closely and it occupies an important place in his oeuvre. Born in 1875 in Rotterdam as the son of a dealer in paint and paintings, Van Mastenbroek became familiar at an early age with art and artists such as the Hague School painters, Jongkind and the French artists Corot and Daubigny. At about seventeen he had already made hundreds of sketches which were later to stand him in good stead when he was working on his paintings. When he was eighteen he was offered a contract for one year by an English art dealer, which led to his paintings being displayed at major international exhibitions in London and New York.

Johann Hendrik van Mastenbroek was born in Rotterdam in December of 1875 to (the wife of?) painter Johannes van Mastenbroek. The younger Mastenbroek remained in the city of his birth until 1911 when he relocated to The Hague. Mastenbroek, essentially a self-taught artist, worked in both oil and watercolour and often depicted rivers and waterways such as the Maas and the Thames, cityscapes, and port scenes.

Playing FLICKR is a public space installation by Mediamatic on the 11th floor of the PostCS building in Amsterdam.

The diners in bar/restaurant/club 11 will be subjected to the wrath of fellow visitors SMSing whatever keyword they want to the installation that pulls photos from the online community flickr and projects them onto Restaurant 11's huge panoramic screens.

Flickr.com is a friendly website where amateur and professional photographers alike can upload and share their images. The users tag their photographs with keywords, which makes it easy for other users to browse photographs and find images of their interest.

The diners in Restaurant 11 can use their mobile phones to submit a keyword of their choice, which will later appear on the surrounding screens with corresponding photographs so that while they dine the backdrop of the restaurant will be adapted to their personal wishes.

Playing Flicker is a concept of Willem Velthoven. The software is developed by Cuno de Boer at Mediamatic Atelier.

Digital writing on Empyre

Writing is one of the oldest known technologies, but the concept of writing did not change as substantially as the different forms of text mediation have done, throughout the years. Nevertheless, the invention of press and, most recently, of the computer, altered important
operations related to how words and paragraphs are organized. Also, devices such as the Internet, DVD and mobile equipments allowed new forms of writing and publishing.

During the month of October, Bill Seaman, Brigid McLeer, Friedrich
Block, Giselle Beiguelman and Sue Thomas will discuss, at the empyre
mailing list (http://www.subtle.net/empyre), if the concept of
writing is still adequate to describe the most eloquent examples of
creative processes involving words and digital media.

Given the growing use of sound, image and programming at the web once claimed to be the media that brought text back to the center of an increasingly image oriented culture=8B, what is the state of the art, on the field of digital writing? Issues such as the recombinant nature of digital writing, writing for public spaces (and related notions of placement / displacement), sampling as a form of intertextuality and writing for mobile devices, among others, will be the central topics.
