Stole My Car

Stole My Car

A machinima set in Rockstar's San Andreas to a parody of OMC's "How Bizzare". Follows the misadventures of our gangsta protagonist and his mission to get his ride back, and put the busta who jacked it in a world of hurt.

NOTE: Originally posted by LaPetiteClaudine (thanks!), then reposted by me, the creator.

EDIT: The credit for the song 'Stole My Car' goes to Dene Young of Rotorua NZ, many thanks to him (and of course OMC for 'How Bizzare').

Surrend

Denmark - Berlingske Tidende

Danish artists attack Ahmadinejad

Surrend, a group of Danish artists that specialises in provoking people in power, has now targeted Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

It published what was ostensibly a profession of loyalty to Ahmadinejad in the form of an advertisement written in poor English in the Tehran Times. However, the initial letters of the five lines of text spell the word SWINE.

When the newspaper realised what had happened it was appalled.

In an interview with Af Bent Blündikow, Jan Egesborg, one of the two Surrend artists, explained that the act was by no means in the tradition of the "routine pacifist blathering" typical of the 1970s and 1980s.

"We can't be pigeonholed and we don't just attack the right-wing fringe. The new thing is that we're moving in territory usually reserved for journalists. We attack leftist dictatorships just as vigorously. We're not part of the traditional Danish art scene. We come from the street-art scene and have no ties with old ideologies." (22/12/2006)

Stencil Graffiti Capital: Melbourne

So how lucky are we that Melbourne is considered right at the top of the game? Not only do we have some phenomenal local artists, we also attract some of the world's premium examples of this very controversial medium. Names like Psalm, Phibs, Sixten, Meek, Rone, Prism, Sync, Meggs, and Banksy are just some of the high-profile underground that we attract to our humble little cities and Melbourne stands out from them all.

Whilst certainly not unique, the approach of this book seems to stand by itself in a time where graffiti-dedicated journals seem to reign in the halls of chain bookstores and online depositories (nb. amazon.com). By breaking the chapters into various content-related categories, SGC:M allows an insight that can otherwise be easily lost in the multitude of attention seeking bullshit that adorns our public places.

Stencil Graffiti Capital: Melbourne retails for $55.00 AUD, and can be purchased through www.stencilgraffiticapital.com.

Looking at interactive art practices artists and critics will shed light on one of the key concerns for many creative practitioners - engaging the emotions of the audience/user. They will focus on the meaning and wish for 'emotional engagement' and interactivity.

Artists seem compelled to expand the sensory capabilities of our bodies, but what do we gain through this process? How do we conceptualise interactivity and incorporate emotional values? Does interactivity offer, due to its participatory nature, a more profound experience than traditional forms of art? How does one engage and sustain the interest of the public in an interactive experience? How does one define the line between spectacle and works that create a chain of associations and provide a space for engagement, interpretation and participation?

Reflections on Graffiti

“Aren’t you cool, you can scribble illegibly on toilet walls”

..it is important to recognise that there is an element of authorial intent to address. It may be argued that the design of the tag is not intended to be accessible to those outside of the subculture, or unknowledgeable of the (sub)cultural aesthetics.

...Regardless of whether the tag was designed to be accessible, the aggressive delivery of it as a text – its placement on a public surface – renders it a public work to some extent, and to an extent it demands an engagement or response from the public to which it is presented.

...The tag on the toilet door aggressively exposes the gap between representation and the represented. But there is a further gap, a second level or derivative gap, in this text also. The tag is representative of the presence of the tagger (the tag necessarily recalls the persistence and resistance of the tagger). The tag represents artistic freedom, rebellion, anti-censorship, style, transgression of surveillance, and transgressive use of public space among other things.

ceci n'est pas un mot

..However, where are we left when a particular style of painting continually produces text, and the style or genre of painting is comprised of text that ‘we’ cannot read? Does the relation between the painting and its title collapse in graffiti when the untitled painting can be considered the title itself?

...Finally, it might be important to consider further the element of re-iteration that is central to the phenomenon of tagging. There is an element to tagging in which the tagger seeks maximum exposure by marking surfaces as prolifically as possible, tagging as frequently as possible within particular geographic and spatial zones. The self-similarity of the re-iterations of a particular tag could make it recognisable or readable to readers of the artist’s work although it is first read as ‘illegible’. This can be the case even if the reader never manages to decipher the word that is the formal subject of the art.

au revoir to Microsoft

The French Say Au Revoir to Microsoft Software.

By David Garrett

Currently, a number of French ministries and government bureaus run Linux, but only on servers. France's Senate and National Assembly will be the first to use Linux on workstations, although neither one has announced which flavor of Linux it plans to use instead of Microsoft's software next year.

The French parliament has said au revoir to Microsoft. Starting in June of next year, French deputies will use desktops and servers running Linux, Mozilla's Firefox Web browser, and OpenOffice.org, a free open-source alternative to Microsoft's Office software.

For day-to-day documents, French members of parliament and their staff will use OpenOffice.org, currently in version 2.0.4 and designed to compete directly with Microsoft's Office System.

With versions available in languages from Arabic to Welsh, OpenOffice.org includes several modules to compete with Microsoft Office: Writer, a word processor; Calc, a spreadsheet program; Impress, a presentation package; and Draw, a software package for designing graphics. OpenOffice.org also includes Base, a database tool that competes with Microsoft's Access.

Why the change? The French parliament, composed of an upper chamber (le Senat, or Senate) and a lower chamber (l'Assemblee Nationale, or National Assembly), believes it can save money using open-source software, despite the near-term costs of switching from Microsoft systems and retraining all employees.

But that is a matter of some debate...

Pescara Electronic Artists Meeting

*The Diamond*
Pescara Electronic Artists Meeting 2k6
6 - 10 December 2006
Pescara, Ecoteca, Via Caboto 19

The fourth edition of the Pescara Electronic Artists Meeting, amongst the most important events concerning contemporary electronic/digital based arts, will take place from the 6th to the 10th of December.

Organized by the Artificialia network, the P.E.A.M. is conceived to be an international meeting and confrontation point for those artists, intellectuals, experts, and others who work in an electronic context or make use of electronics as a basic means of expression. This edition will showcase a large and refined selection of visual artists, performers, musicians amongst the most innovative of the field. The leit-motiv of the whole event will be "the Diamond", an attempt to gather artists and experts coming from as many disciplines as possible (sculpture, dance, theater, literature, music, visual arts, etc.), all with a marked high-tech approach, and to extraordinarily have them converge to the stimulating location of Ecoteca, in Pescara.

Therefore, the idea is to let many intellectuals (critics and curators) converge and present one (inimitable) or two (dichotomy) artists in a single place (the diamond), and, as a consequence, the whole Peam2006 edition will be centered onto unicity and dichotomy - such as war and peace, big and small, good and bad, love and hate, cleverness and stupidity, beauty and ugliness, close and far away, fear and comfort, real and virtual, and so on - and onto their sense of existence. In other words, the meaning itself of the concept of opposites, defining different representations of an unique symbolic system, will be put to a test, artistically.

Info: www.artificialia.com/peam2006/english.html
Press Conference: Tuesday, 5 December 2006, 11.30 AM, Sala dei Marmi,
Provincia di Pescara, Piazza Italia 30 - Pescara
Contacts: peam2006@artificialia.com

In this context, curator and critic *Domenico Quaranta* (www.domenicoquaranta.com/english.html) will introduce the work of Gazira Babeli and Damiano Colacito, two artists who, in pretty different ways, declare the reality of our experience of virtual worlds.

Born in Second Life on 31st March 2006, *Gazira Babeli*
(http://www.gazirababeli.com/) is an artist who turns the performativity of the code into performance itself. Weedy and flexuous in her long black dress which covers fashionably her polygonal haunches, Gazira radiates a strange charm that makes her somebody in between a Voodoo witch and an X-men heroine. Her charm that becomes even more evident during her masterful performances, in which she activates scripts as if they were spells, makes earthquakes happens, provokes natural fatalities and invasions of pop icons (in the place of the biblical locusts). Gazira Babeli is NOT the project of an artist who works in Second Life. She IS an artist, who makes, records and signs performances based on code. She is real, like you and me, even if her action platform is a world of bits.

Born in Atri (TE) in 1973, *Damiano Colacito*
(http://www.videoludica.com/news.php?news=434) focuses his work on the basic elements of the contemporary media landscape and the complex relationship between the virtual and the real. In the last few years he devoted himself to the creation of wooden sculptures that portray objects coming from the FPS, such as med-kits, power-ups, weapons, and etc. The Scotchprint skins he puts on the sculptures allows the author to work on details so to obtain a pretty refined reproduction of the texture of those virtual objects, and the use of sound effects, every now and then, makes the realism of the reproduction even finer. As a Pino Pascali of the Doom generation, Colacito creates conceptual sculptures that result to be amazing for both the gamer and the people who don't play videogames: the former comes across familiar objects in the wrong context, while the second has to deal with unfamiliar objects seemingly coming from another world and culture. Somehow, Colacito orchestrates a kind of mental teletransport, and materializes the insubstantial nature of the electric energy.

Call for Artists’ film and video

*International Call for Artists’ film and video *

*AT HOME IN EUROPE *
ISIS Arts (UK) and it’s international project partners BEK (Norway), InterSpace (Bulgaria) and RIXC (Latvia) are curating a new screening programme around the theme of European Identity for the Big M, ISIS Art’s inflatable touring space.

Daily, more and more European people decide to live in other European countries. With a shifting concept of nationality it becomes increasingly important to consider what it means to be European. Is there such a thing as European Identity and how does it relate to national identity?

For this programme we invite submissions of films or video works on this theme from artists of any nationality.

Selected works will become part of the new screening programme which will tour to the four partnering countries between May 2007 and September 2007.

Work will be selected through open submission. In order to be considered individual works must:

* Have a running time of 5 minutes or less

* Be single channel and non interactive

* Address the project theme

Selected artists will receive an exhibition fee of € 300 (The Big M is not a commercial venture and admission is free). Copyright remains solely with the artist.

The Big M is a highly stylised inflatable structure that functions as a temporary and mobile venue for the presentation of video and digital media. Unique in both design and function, the Big M provides an alternative to the conventional gallery setting and exhibits work by emerging and established artists to diverse audiences.
