Me Bike - The Dream Bike Festival 27 – 29 July '07The Me Bike – Dream Bike Festival was inspired by a Simpsons episode, where Homer was asked to build his dream car and does so with bubble domes, fins and horns that play ‘La Cucaracha’. In true Amsterdam style, the festival brings together international and national artists, bike aficionados and enthusiasts to conceive and present their very own Dream Bike.

This year’s Me Bike - The Dream Bike Festival will take place at the Westergasterrein. The question “What does your dream bike look like?” is answered by various mediums including paintings, graphics, animation, installations – and bicycles. Paper bikes, time machine bikes, love bikes, flower bikes – hundreds of ‘Dream Bikes’ will be on view.

Festival events include live bike customizations, a bike-related cinema program at the Ketelhuis, BMX demonstrations and a Children’s Corner by MacBike. A big city-wide bike tour, which everyone is welcome to join in, will take place on Saturday the 28th.

Tristan Manco is a writer, graphic designer, and leading authority on the graffiti and street art scenes. He is the author of best-selling books on the subjects of stencil graffiti, contemporary street art, and Brazilian graffiti. At the Streetlab Festival Manco will give a lecture on street art.

During the Festival, there will be plenty of fashion shows, exhibitions and performances to attend, but this time around Streetlab offers visitors even more than pure visual stimuli and sources of inspiration: there are workshops and master classes by stylists, street art specialists, trend watchers, style gurus and other professionals.

An artist showing at Germany's Documenta exhibition of cutting-edge contemporary art is irate that her work, which consists of white tape stuck on roads to form crosses, was quickly removed by Kassel municipal workers.

Lotty Rosenfeld described herself as "appalled" that her work of art was unceremoniously removed by sanitation workers in the city of Kassel, who, one should add, probably had little idea they were destroying works of art when they scraped her white tape off the pavement on city streets.



"It's an act of violence and I feel I've been completely disregarded," she fumed to the dpa news agency.



The Chilean artist's work, putting white tape crosses on streets, dates back to an illegal art action from 1979 in Chile's capital Santiago. There she created hundreds of crosses -- representing death -- to protest the brutality of the dictator Augusto Pinochet.

Since then she has repeated the work in many countries and cities, including India, Berlin and in front of the White House in Washington, DC.



"Sometimes the crosses were removed on the same day, sometimes after a year and sometimes not at all," she said. "But in Kassel, the process seemed particularly brutal."



It appears German efficiency and an inborn need for order took the South American by surprise.



"They scraped it off with shovels and just threw it into the trash," she said. "That hurt."



But she's not blaming sanitation workers. Rather, she's pointing her finger at Documenta officials, saying they didn't really appreciate her work.


As for the exhibition, a spokesperson said the curators do regret the destruction of the work, "but traffic rules still apply, even in the city hosting the Documenta."

Streetlab isn’t just a great place to get your fix of fashion, there is also a long list of artists – from graffiti writers to graphic designers – at hand. Example in case? Bitches in Control: three chicks (F.Lady, Meggie and Lowlita) who have been working together since 2003. They paint murals, make silk-screen prints, produce their own graffiti and street art magazine titled ‘Catfight’ and run their own fashion label: Hübsch & Hardcore. Talk about some busy ‘bitches’!
You can also marvel at the murals and other (spray) painted works of Verenigde Straten. This Amsterdam-based street collective was born at Streetlab Showoff#1, which was held at 11, Amsterdam. Put the five members of the collective together, that is Crackpot, Hetzer, Kom, Sopa000 and Mike Clark, and you’ll end up with raw, no-holds-barred work. You have been warned!

The heart of the Streetlab Festival is a large-scale exhibition that features work from both national and international artists and fashion designers. Fifty containers have been placed in Zuiveringshal West. Here the participating designers, photographers, artists and other creatives will present their work to the public.

Nuart

Nuart is a dynamic city wide event on both gallery and street walls. From the first week in September an international team of street artists start to leave their mark on the city of Stavanger, Norway.

The Apocalypse of Max Beckmann

A nice companion to the collection on display at the Van Gogh Museum, this series features 27 lithographs from the German Expressionist, all inspired by the Biblical apocalypse. Max Beckmann in Amsterdam, 1937-1947

An extensive retrospective of the work produced by the artist during his years in Amsterdam. One of the most distinguished German artists of the 20th century, Beckmann fled to the city in 1937 after the Nazis had labelled his paintings Entartete Kunst. Facing Death

I was told that thay are the gift of an elderly Amsterdam woman who spread the seeds in the streets before she died. They have continued to spread and bloom.

In 2003 he was a postdoc fellow at University of Queensland in Brisbane. 2004 he was appointed research professor at the Hogeschool van Amsterdam for Interactive media and associate professor for New Media at the University of Amsterdam.

**Pioneering Second Life artist to inspire Australian artists**

On 12 July, the Australia Council for the Arts, in partnership with
the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), will host its first
ever artist forum in Second Life.

The in-world event, to be moderated by ABCs Sunday Arts
reporter/producer Fenella Kernebone, is for the Australia Councils
inaugural Second Life artist residency.

In an open forum at 7pm (EST) on ABC Island, Paris-based artist and
architect Brad Kligerman - one of the first artists in Second Life to
complete an in-world residency - will present his work, discuss ideas
and answer participants questions.

Brad, an architect and teacher, completed his 11-week residency with
US-based Ars Virtua <http://arsvirtua.com>
a new media centre and gallery in Second Life, where he questioned
the idea of materiality in the rendered environment and the nature of
image.

Australia Council chief executive officer Kathy Keele said the
partnership with the ABC was a great fit with the Australia Councils
Second Life initiative. The ABC was the first Australian media
organisation to establish a presence in Second Life and we are
excited about working with them on this project.

We hope that Australian artists gain valuable insight from Brad
Kligermans successful art interventions in Second Life and that they
will be inspired to create innovative works in-world that will place
them at the forefront of this groundbreaking practice, Kathy Keele
said.

The Australia Council has also set up an artists' forum in Second
Life for artists looking for other artists with whom to collaborate.

Op zaterdag 11 augustus opent GO Gallery de expositie Aerosol Symphonies.
(Aerosol = spuitbus). De opening van deze expositie valt samen met de start van het Grachtenfestival 2007 in Amsterdam. Het Grachtenfestival is het jaarlijks terugkerende muziekfestival waarvan uitvoeringen van (klassieke) muziek op bijzondere locaties in Amsterdam de basis vormen.

Op de expositie Aerosol Symphonies, worden de werelden van klassieke muziek en moderne kunst / street-art bij elkaar gebracht.
12 jonge kunstenaars hebben zich laten inspireren door een opera, componist of symfonie. Ze hebben allemaal een aantal klassieke muziekstukken uitgekozen, muziekstukken die hen raken en inspireren. Deze muziek, het ontstaan en het verhaal ervan, is grondig bestudeerd.
Naar dit muziekstuk hebben de kunstenaars vervolgens een eigen kunstwerk, een schilderij, gecomponeerd.

Zoals de componist geïnspireerd zal zijn door beelden uit zà jn omgeving, is in dit geval de kunstenaar geïnspireerd door de muziek van zijn favoriete componist.
De deelnemende kustenaars aan deze expositie zijn de volgende:

De deelnemende kunstenaars zijn niet de eerste de beste street-art kunstenaars die in de Amsterdamse nachten hun kunsten vertonen en uitgenodigd zijn voor deze expositie:
Laser 3.14 heeft de laatste jaren grote bekendheid gekregen met zijn straatgedichten. Bij zijn werk voert de vorm niet meer de boventoon, de inhoud des te meer. Zijn teksten hebben vaak een maatschappij kritische ondertoon. Laser 3.14 is tevens de curator van deze expositie.
Morcky, één van het duo Two Things, heeft de afgelopen jaren o.a. videoclips en reclames gemaakt voor o.a.: Heineken, EMI (videoclips voor Anouk en Brain Power), Adidas, Nike, IDTV.



Faith71 schildert veel in opdracht, o.a. voor de gemeente Amsterdam, op bouwschuttingen en rolluiken (Waterlandplein, Amsterdam-Noord).
Het werk van Faith71 is o.a. aangekocht door het Amsterdams Historisch museum. Hij kreeg (inter)nationale bekendheid met zijn portret van Theo van Gogh in de Warmoesstraat te Amsterdam, op de dag van zijn moord, 2 november 2004.
Illustrator Tiquestar Illuminat Rex illustreert momenteel veel voor Vrij Nederland. Heeft de afgelopen jaren veel opdrachten gedaan voor o.a. ING en Postbank, LEVI’s, MTV, Tropen Instituut e.v.a..

On Saturday 11 augusts open GO Gallery the expositie Aerosol Symphonies. (Aerosol = aerosol).

The opening of this expositie coincides with the start of grachten festival 2007 in Amsterdam.



On the expositie Aerosol Symphonies, the worlds of traditional music and modern, urban, art at each other are brought. 10 young artists could be inspired by their favoriete opera, type-setter or symphony. They have all selected a number of traditional pieces of music, pieces of music which touch them and inspire. This music, the ontstaan and the tale of it, has been studied thoroughly. To this piece of music the artists have vervolgens their own art work, a painting, composed. Such as the type-setter be by pictures from zíjn surroundings, in this case the artist it will be inspired have been inspired by the music of its favoriete type-setter.



The participating coast arse to this expositie is the following: Faith 71, wood (Johan Andeloe), illustrator Tiquestar Illuminat Rex, laser 3.14, Morcky (Two Things), Pauline nothing, Weasel, Recal, Esther Claus and DelightDelirium.

The participating artists are not the first the besten.



Morcky one of the two-high rolling mill Two Things, has among other things made the previous years videoclips and publicities for among other things: Heineken, EMI (videoclips for Anouk and Brain Power), Adidas, Nike, IDTV.
