Peer Gallery - Glebe

It is common for the written word to lack personality. Characters of the English alphabet are all formed around a skeletal structure that governs the basis of every font created, making them essentially the same. Over time, their simplicity has out ruled unnecessary detail due to their need for direct functionality. This often makes it difficult to interpret the personality behind words at the best of times.

Contemporary society uses fonts everywhere, every day and so it seems the craft and beauty behind what was originally a hailed art form has now been lost and somewhat taken for granted.

GO FONT UR SELF* is an exhibition exploring type based artworks that reinvent the uniqueness of our alphabet.

BLACK SUN (the Art of Dying)
Photography by BEN ALI ONG
Opening from 6.30pm, Friday Feb 20
Continues 11-5pm Saturday - Wednesday.
257 Crown St, Darlinghurst.

"In this my most recent - and still ongoing - body of work, the themes of death, mortality and consciousness are revisited. Recurrent also are the negative sandwiching, inscription of scratches and the particular sequencing of the images, which encourages a conversation between the landscape and portrait."
-The Artist

http://www.benaliong.com/

"Ben Ali-Ong is going to be a major player in the photographic arena. At only 26 he has achieved a great deal in the way of prizes and awards for his work. He has participated in numerous group shows and has had six solo exhibitions in three years. For such a young artist he shows incredible focus and vision. Using film and his own images, he shoots, scratches, scans, retouches, layers and mixes the works, until the final result yields a mysterious and beautiful black and white world."

This SOS retrospective will combine some of these hugely collectible works with the latest and greatest prints and canvasses from their stable of artists. Canvases and highly collectible prints including rare items such as printers proofs and artist proofs and previously sold out editions by Beejoir, MauMau, Mantis, Cyclops, K-guy, AMP, Galo, and BON will be all be available, including works such as Beejoir’s infamous “LV Child”, “Little Red Riding Hoodie” by Mau Mau, “Walrus Boy” by AMP and “Shell Oil for Blood” by Beejoir, which is printed on original Iraqi dinar notes featuring the face of Saddam Hussein.

Reface Street Art - Perth

At the heart of Re-Face is a website that allows established artists and unknowns, anyone who creates or experiences art, to share their work, their attitudes and their opinions about each other’s work and the value and the future of art in Western Australia.

In addition to the website that allows users to upload, view and comment on art from around Western Australia and the world, Re-Face takes the art to the public via two weekends of night-time projection exhibitions designed to challenge audience perceptions of art, street art and public space. How do people’s attitudes to street art change if the images are impermanent? And are people’s responses to everyday urban spaces made more vibrant?

The building-size projections are a mix of slideshows, interactive screens, curated collections and the backdrop for interactive panel discussions about art and public space.

Electronic Frontier Foundation

From the Internet to the iPod, technologies are transforming our society and empowering us as speakers, citizens, creators, and consumers. When our freedoms in the networked world come under attack, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is the first line of defense. EFF broke new ground when it was founded in 1990 — well before the Internet was on most people's radar — and continues to confront cutting-edge issues defending free speech, privacy, innovation, and consumer rights today. From the beginning, EFF has championed the public interest in every critical battle affecting digital rights.

Darwin Stickers

These stickers are being introduced to spread awareness and appreciation of Charles Darwin, whose theory of natural selection provided a simple, non-supernatural explanation for how life evolves. Although this stickering project is probably futile, it will hopefully delay our slip into Dark Ages II by several days. Maybe a week. Instructions and tips can be found below, and examples of stickers in action on my flickr site. And if you're into Facebook, there's a group

there, too.

Darwin Fish

The Darwin Fish is a Darwinist's version of the fish (Icthus) symbol used as a bumper sticker by some Christians. The various designs are intended to promote Darwinism, and to show the owner believes in evolution rather than creation.
