As co-founder and director of SymbioticA, School of Anatomy & Human Biology, University of Western Australia, his artistic and scientific works all concentrate on wet biology and life sciences. He is in the Netherlands on invitation of the Centre for Society and Genomics.

Kunstenaar, wetenschapper en curator Oron Catts zal een lezing geven over de 'ethiek van weefselcultures en kunst' op zondag 20 april om 16.00 uur in het Theatrum Anatomicum van de Waag in Amsterdam.

Als medeoprichter en hoofd van SymbioticA, School of Anatomy & Human Biology aan de Universiteit van West-Australië heeft de overgrote meerderheid van Catts’ artistieke en wetenschappelijke productie te maken met zogenaamde natte biologie en life sciences. Hij is in Nederland op uitnodiging van het Centre for Society and Genomics.

De lezing gaat over aspecten van de geschiedenis van de fragmentatie van het menselijk lichaam aan de hand van een beschouwing over weefseltechnologie vanuit medisch, utilitair en artistiek perspectief.

Het Tissue Culture & Art Project vormt het uitgangspunt voor een aantal ethische en ontologische vragen en zorgen voortkomend uit het toenemende gebruik van levend materiaal in hedendaagse weefselcultures.

Oron Catts (1967) is kunstenaar, wetenschapper en curator, medeoprichter en hoofd van SymbioticA, School of Anatomy & Human Biology, Universiteit van West-Australië. SymbioticA is een artistiek laboratorium gewijd aan onderzoek naar en kritiek op life sciences, dat het mogelijk maakt voor kunstenaars zich bezig te houden met de praktijk van de natte biologie en biologisch laboratoriumonderzoek. SymbioticA won in 2007 de Prix Ars Electronika Golden Nica in Hybrid Art. Oron Catts exposeerde eigen werk en dat van SymbioticA internationaal, ondermeer in MoMa, New York; Ars Electronika, Lintz; National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; Tate Modern, London. Hij was als onderzoeker verbonden aan Harvard Medical School en werkt momenteel binnen het EMA programma van Stanford University aan een kunst en biologie initiatief.

Artist, researcher and curator Oron Catts will give a lecture on Sunday April 20th, 16.00 (CET+1) at the Theatrum Anatomicum of Waag Society in Amsterdam.

As co-founder and director of SymbioticA, School of Anatomy & Human Biology, University of Western Australia, his artistic and scientific works all concentrate on wet biology and life sciences. He is in the Netherlands on invitation of the Centre for Society and Genomics.

Catts’ talk at Waag Society covers some aspects of the history of the fragmentation of the body through tissue technologies from medical, utilitarian and artistic perspectives. It will use the work of the Tissue Culture & Art Project as a departure point for dealing with a range of ethical and ontological concerns rising from the growing use of living fragments in contemporary cultures.
